lusting for fall…for less

So I know that we still have planty of summer left. Weeks, in fact.  I can’t stand when I see Halloween merchandise in stores when I’m still hanging at the beach. And don’t get me started on how ridiculously early Christmas stuff comes out. But I will say, that right about now, I start to get excited for fall. I’m not trying to rush things; I’m hanging onto every last summer minute, but I can’t help it. Fall lines have started to show up, and it’s hard not to get excited about all the wonderful things to come. There are always a few things that I’m coveting for a new season, and this upcoming one is no different. As usual, many of the things I lust after are unobtainable for me. Boo. So I included more reasonable options that are totally do-able. Here are a few things I’m loving.

999

This leather jacket by Annie Bing has had me drooling for quite some time. But at $999, I’m more likely to grow a third arm than be able to buy it. It’s just not happening. What I love about it is that it’s a little rock and roll, and a little lady like. The shoulder quilting is the perfect detail. And I can only imagine how buttery soft it is. Le sigh. Head over here to check it out: (and check out the rest of her line-it’s amazing) http://www.aninebing.com/

However, there are some reasonable options out there. Here’s my favorite:

Oh hey, awesome Topshop jacket that looks just like the awesome Annie Bing. Ok, so it’s faux, but the design is fantastic. Buckles? Check. Zippers? Check. Quilting? Check. And for $85, it’s within reach for average gals like me. Available here: http://us.topshop.com

Awhile back, I was seeing these great d’orsay flats everywhere. Every fashion blogger I follow had them, and I instantly wanted them. Here’s what they were wearing:

595

These flats are from Jenni Kayne. I’ve been a fan of hers for quite some time, and I would love to get my hands on these. They come in many different colors and materials, and each one is beautiful. However…..this particular pair is $595. Not gonna happen. My husband would lose it. But if you’re a lucky gal, you can find them here:http://www.shopbop.com/

35.90

Zara to the rescue! Whenever I want a trendy item but don’t want to shell out the cash, I go to Zara. And they never disappoint. These d’orsay flats are PERFECT. And they’re $35.90. !! I tried them on in the store, and they’re just what I’ve been looking for. These will be my go-to shoe for fall. I think this shoe will be huge for fall. You heard it here first. (ok, not really….) Find them at: http://www.zara.com/us/

This last lust/less duo may be the biggest one. Like ever. I am big fan of bags. I am, after all, a female. And when the Pashli came out, I joined millions of women around the world who shed some tears because we knew we’d never have it. (you think I’d be use to that feeling by now…) Here’s the 3.1 Philip Lim beauty:

895

Isn’t she a beauty? At $895, however, well, just, no. I have one “it” bag that I carry as much as humanly possible (it’s a DVF) and I’m pretty sure that’s my allotment. And I’ll probably be buried with it. But what I love about this bag is that it’s beautifully made, is versatile, and is a classic. I’ve picked it up a few times in the store and checked myself out in the mirror carrying it. And I might or might not have uttered “Daaaaamn I look good with this…” Find here: http://www.shopbop.com/

Now hold onto your hats, here, because it’s Pashlis for everyone!!!!!

34.95

So this little nugget is a preview for the 3.1 Philip Lim for Target line. And do you see what’s front and center? It’s a mini Pashli. Guess how much. Go ahead. It’s $34.99. The problem is, unless you’re prepared to slap/bite/punch a few ladies to get your hands on it, this pic is probably the closest you’ll get. Unless you go to ebay the day after the collection launches and are willing to shell out hundreds of dollars. (That drives me crazy) I think I just might be willing to go to such measures. Don’t judge me, but I think I’m asking my sitter to come over on September 15 for a few hours so I can camp out and hopefully come home with one of these little gems. Did I mention it’s $34.99? Meet me at Target in September. I’ll be the one pulling someone’s hair. Don’t judge. Or get in my way.

Please give me strength…

This time of year is really tough for me. There are end of season sales going on everywhere I look, and I lack the strength to resist. Every day my inbox is overflowing with sale notices. I even lack the strength to unsubscribe from those. What am I to do? Every year my husband gives me that look when the credit card statement comes in- and I truly am sorry. But I can’t seem to stop myself. I try, I really do. And there are certain sales that I just cannot resist. They’re just too good. I picked up a couple tops from JCrew and Madewell (two of my favs) that were so cheap, they were practically giving them away. I would have been a fool not to buy them. (When you get emails from JCrew and Madewell that say 40% off final sale items, you take a look. I’m no fool.) And now, two other places are having sales that are off. the. hook. Hello, Zara and Shopbop. (I can hear every man that follows this blog rolling their eyes and leaving this page now-except for my husband, who wants to know what I spent.) Nearly everything at Zara is on serious sale, both online and in-store, and I have browsed both. It’s insane how good it is. And Shopbop is offering an additional 25% off their sale items until tomorrow. I’ve already taken advantage of both. I picked up a pair of sneakers from Zara that I’ve been drooling over for months for $29.99 (normally $130). They’re pony hair leopard sneakers with spikes. Because what girl doesn’t need those in her closet? And I picked up a cute cover up/dress from Shopbop for $20. (was normally $75 and has since sold out.) But that hasn’t stopped me from continuously stopping by both places. I was in Zara tonight, and just actually left the Shopbop site. And with that, I just thought I’d share with you some of my favorite things that are out there right now.

Here are my Zara picks:

summer sandals

With summer fast approaching, I’ve been taking inventory of my shoes. Specifically, my sandals. I like to try to get at least one new pair each summer, and I just wanted to share with you some of my favorites and what I’ve got my eye on right now.

sumer sandals

Marc by Marc Jacobs retro high heels / Elizabeth and James high heels / Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent t-strap shoes / Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent leather sandals / Rachel Zoe / Madewell / Tory Burch espadrille / Fitness shoes / Zara studded shoes / Zara leather sandals / ASOS wide sandals / Zara leather sandals
I’m definitely feeling metallics. I don’t own a metallic sandal, and I think it’s a great way to stay neutral yet it also adds a little pizazz. And I definitely love some embellishment. I try to keep my rubber flip flops for the beach and pool and with beauties like these, I have no excuse not to. I have a few go-to pairs of sandals that get me through the whole summer. (But I’m always adding…) Which ones are your favorite?
Enjoy the weekend!!!

Will someone please buy me one of these?

Dressing for spring is tricky. In the mornings you can almost see your breath, so you pile on the layers or a heavy coat, only to be sweating your ass off 3 hours later. It’s hard to know how to dress. I always feel like the worst parent ever when I send my daughter to school in shorts and sandals because after checking Weather Bug ten times on my iphone, it says it will be 78 degrees, only to get outside and see it’s only like 40. And because we’re running late like pretty much every day, there’s no time to change. Thankfully, it’s a short drive to school and my car heats up fast. Oops.

For me, the best solution to this is light layering. A tee under a light sweater under a denim or light jacket does the trick. But sometimes I want to zhush up the layers, and right now I’m really coveting floral blazers. They feel so right now, so fresh. I know floral is a very obvious and literal print to choose for spring, but it always feels right. And in a blazer? So right. I love them with jeans and a tee, with shorts to make a suit, or over a dress. It ups the ante on any outfit. But I think my favorite effect is mixing it with another print-especially stripes. A striped tee, floral blazer and jeans is as perfect as it gets for me right now. And the cool thing is, the floral blazer comes in every price point. Everyone from Forever 21 to Stella McCartney is whipping them out, so for as little as $30, you can welcome one of these beauties into your closet. I have had my eye on one particular one for a couple months now. What’s your favorite?

See what I mean about the stripes and floral mix? Love. So like I said, will someone please buy me one of these?

The Gap is rocking my world.

Ok, so our weekend kicked my ass. I’m done. Nearly comatose. Between dance class, a birthday party and a barbecue, I’m lucky I’m even able to sit upright. As we speak I’m pretty sure I’m drooling into my coffee. It was fun and all, don’t get me wrong, but I’m done. But I just can’t retire to the couch for Game Of Thrones (anyone else obsessed?) without getting just a little something in for Monday. Yesterday at a birthday party, a friend of mine was wearing the most kick-ass gorgeous pants-and I found out she got them at The Gap. Normally, I’d have been shocked; but has anyone else noticed how incredibly awesome The Gap has become? I think everyone I’ve ever met has shopped there at some point. I know that in junior high I probably thought it was as good as couture-that pair of pea-green acid-washed jeans I had were nothing short of perfection. But after buying my clothes there for most of my teenage years, I pretty much forgot about it. That is, until recently. Some stores go through periods of awesomeness-they get different buyers, etc.. And now is The Gap’s time. It has become one of my go-to places for printed pants, shorts, and basic tees. Not to mention, they’ve come out with some great shoes and bags. The Gap is cool again, peeps. If you haven’t checked it out recently, I highly recommend it. It’s casual chic with a great price tag. Your closet (and your wallet) will thank you.

Here’s what I’m currently coveting:

All looks available at: http://www.gap.com/

I’m really, really digging these looks for spring. The prints and colors are so vibrant! I have a pair of pants on order and can’t wait to get my hands on them. You just can’t go wrong with a beautiful floral.

Happy Monday!!

the drop off

If you are anything like me, your mornings with kids are nuts. Rarely does a day ever go smoothly. Usually, someone has overslept, my son has a major diaper situation as soon as we’re ready to walk out the door, a potty trip goes awry (usually requiring an outfit change), I spill coffee all down my shirt (if I’m lucky enough to get a cup), my son can’t find his shoe/sock/blanket/Lightning McQueen/sippy cup…… Whatever can go wrong, always does. So a bit of planning is required. I’ve found that laying out everyone’s clothes the night before, including my own, saves me a ton of time in the morning. But what is also does is guarantee that I won’t spend the day in sweatpants and a baseball cap. When I do that, I feel  like it sets the tone for the day-and that day inevitably turns out to be crap. Kinda the same way I feel if I don’t make my bed. If I start the morning off right (a relative term, I realize), the day seems to go right. I feel put together. And it doesn’t take much-a cute tee and jeans with some great flats will do it. Between that and a made bed, I can conquer all the crap my day has to offer. You will always take the time to make sure your kids are taken care of before you leave the house and that they look presentable. It only takes a few extra minutes to do the same for yourself. Here are a few simple and easy pieces to make your morning drop off a little more presentable.

the drop off

Madewell dress / Forever 21 / Forever 21 / Madewell / Gap t shirt / J.Crew j crew jeans / Zara patching jeans / Jack Purcell sneaker / Madewell shoes / Zara mini tote / Madewell messenger bag / J.Crew j crew / J.Crew sunglasses
Here’s hoping all your Monday mornings go smoothly.

Favorite things

I thought I’d give my favorite things post another go. The list just keeps getting longer and longer and quite honestly I think I could do this post every day and not repeat an item. (Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing?) Not to mention I find this one really fun to do. Today’s favorite things are all over the map, but I had to start with shoes:

These lovely numbers from Zara combine two of my favorite things: sneakers and leopard. I’ve put together so many outfits around them-in my head. The only problem with them? I don’t own them yet.

Mast Brothers Chocolate has quickly become one of my very favorite things of all. The company was founded by two brothers who have a deep passion for chocolate-and it truly shows. They have a factory/tasting room in Brooklyn, but you can also buy the bars online from them or a number of other retailers. I was lucky enough to find them at my local Whole Foods. With flavors like Vanilla and Smoke, Serrano Chili, Black Truffle, Sea Salt and their special Brooklyn Blend, their bars are like no other. My personal flavor is the Coffee. It’s crazy good. The texture is a bit different, however-a bit grainy-which I actually like, but my husband doesn’t. More for me. And the packaging it comes in is the prettiest I’ve ever seen-it’s almost too pretty to open. Almost.

Meet my jewelry staple. It’s the Three Spikes necklace from Alimonada. Alimonada is another Brooklyn-based business that has become my favorite go-to source for really cool and really inexpensive jewelry. I love every piece they make, but this necklace is my fav. It really goes with everything and makes everything just a little bit cooler. Oh and did I mention it’s only $26.90?

I’ve been wanting some major art over my bedside table but couldn’t find the right piece-until I came across this. It’s a fashion illustration called “Cricket” by Leigh Viner. (I’ve mentioned her before. She’s incredible.) I want to super-size this for a major effect and I’m really excited to get on it. I’ll share when it’s purchased and hanging.

One of my favorite times of day is after the kids have gone to bed and my husband and I get to cuddle up on the couch and watch all the DVR’d shows that we haven’t been able to watch because all we’ve been watching is Dinosaur Train and Peppa Pig. (Who I’m not opposed to-she’s actually quite polite unlike that ahole Sponge Bob.) And we always cuddle under a blanket. In the colder months, that blanket is a heavy faux fur one-it’s so soft and divine. In the warmer months, I switch it out for a lighter one that I got at West Elm. I had it monogrammed, which really made it ours. West Elm has such great pillows and throws, and they go on sale all the time. Go get your cuddle on.

I love me some Kiehl’s. Do they make anything that isn’t awesome? My daughter’s skin is super sensitive and she gets these really dry and itchy patches on her butt and face (yes, butt and face) and though it’s not quite eczema, it’s not pretty. I’ve tried a bunch of different lotions, but this is my favorite. It’s rich but also light and just perfect.

Can someone please explain to me how little boys can have such stinky feet? I mean, seriously? After a long day, my 2 1/2 year old son’s feet smell like a steak that’s been sitting out in the sun for a week. I don’t get it! So in the summer months, I try to air out his feet as much as possible. Last summer I discovered Natives. If a Croc and a Chuck Taylor had a baby, it would be this. It has the anti-stink holes of the Crocs and the cuteness of a Converse sneaker. Adorable. Now my little guy’s feet can be dealt with without a gas mask. Best. Shoe. Ever.

If I didn’t have regular trips to the salon, I would start to look a bit like Helen Mirren. I’ve had a few gray hairs since my late 20s, but after 2 kids, it’s not just a few-it’s a shit load. I find that my blonde highlights mask them a bit and buy me a bit more time in between visits. But I swim quite a bit, and chlorine is deadly for highlights, so I need to protect them. I use Kerastasse Aqua Seal every time before I get in the pool (or beach or anywhere I’ll be spending a lot of time in the sun). It protects from UV and chlorine and it has kept my hair from going full-on green ‘fro. At $40 a bottle, it’s pricey, but you know what’s more pricey? Having to go back to the salon for all new highlights.

Ah, springtime. When your nasty toes that have been cooped up in thick socks and boots all winter long are finally let out. When you can get out your sandals, peep-toes and flip flops…but you better not until you’ve had those things properly cleaned up. (In the winter months I’m more a DIY pedicure kinda gal-I refuse to get a professional pedi and either a: put my shoes back on and wreck it or b: wear flip flops in 20 degree weather. No thanks.) Essie’s Watermelon has been one of my favorite spring/summer colors for awhile now. It’s not too much of a departure my my beloved red and it’s just the right amount of pink. I just put in on my toes last night and I promise to get it professionally done before I break out my sandals.

This is Parisian Chic: A Style Guide. You know how French women have that certain something, that ‘je ne sais quoi”? (Also known as how the hell do you eat nothing but cheese and bread and not weigh a thousand pounds?) Well, this book tells you to how to get it too. It gives the style tips of the oh-so-chic French women and is such an enjoyable read. It also tells  you all the great must visit spots in Paris-shops, restaurants, museums, nail salons…everything. This sits on my night stand and I never tire of it. Because I’m prepping for my trip to Paris. (ok not really….)

That’s a wrap. I hope you liked a thing or two (or ten), and I hope you all have really wonderful weekends.
